The team at GeoTraceability are pleased to announce that we have completed a field test of our latest product, the Farm Business Plan Builder (FBP Builder).
The FBP Builder tool aims to quickly create tailored plans for smallholder farmers on a large-scale basis, in the interest of increasing farm productivity and improving smallholder livelihoods. It accomplishes this by comparing farm/farmer specific data against agricultural recommendations supplied by agricultural experts. The tool creates two outputs: individual tailored plans for each farmer; and an investment plan at landscape level (aggregation of a large number of individual plans).
The test’s main purpose was to determine if the FBPB’s plans accurately reflect what an agricultural expert would recommend if they visited each farm in person. The test was completed in the Daloa region of Cote d’Ivoire, and included 50 farmers (25 cocoa, 25 coffee).
The trial was a resounding success, as the plans matched 97% of the recommendations (184/190) from the trial’s agricultural expert. In addition, the tool created data representations of projected possible impacts from carrying out the plans. The predictions show an exciting level of impact from the plans, in terms of farm productivity and increasing farmer incomes.
The FBPB is an agnostic tool that can be used for a large variety of crops ranging from cocoa, coffee, cotton, rice, maize, sorghum, cashew and others.
Currently, the FBPB is being rolled out in a palm oil project in Malaysia. As the FBPB’s plans will be carried out during this project, we will be able to show real, tangible evidence of the impact the plans have on farmers.
We look forward to reporting on the outcomes from Malaysia in the coming months.
